I’m feeling the urge to start a Tumblr or a Pinterest or something collecting all the examples of straight people huffing and tutting about how coming out is no big deal and we should stop making such a fuss about it. Y’know, based on their WEALTH OF EXPERIENCE in that area. Trying to decide whether “straightsplaining” is a better name than “straight talking”.
I know this is exactly the sort of Tumblr wank I should be keeping well away from, but this has popped up on my dashboard several times in the last 10 minutes and it bothers me.
Obviously I’m not suggesting for a second that bisexual erasure isn’t a serious problem, and I’m as annoyed as anyone else at all the careless “Tom Daley comes out as gay” news stories, but for a post that makes such a big deal about the specifics of language and the words Tom Daley does and does not use in his statement, at no point does he actually say the word “bisexual” in his video either. Maybe that is what he identifies as, but maybe it isn’t. Maybe he’s still figuring that out, and in the meantime, maybe the only person who should be labelling Tom Daley’s sexuality is Tom Daley, and the rest of us should just sit back and await further instructions.
